First of all a very Happy New Year to all of you.
On the 9th of January 2006, at 0136 Hours Malaysian Standard Time or 1736 Hours UTC, I managed a QSO with William McArthur (KC5ACR) on board the International Space Station (ISS).
Please visit http://www.9w2qc.net/issqso/ for more details.
I am also happy that this QSO has served three points:

1. That the 1st station he worked from Malaysia is a 9 WHISKEY station.
This shows that 9W are also capable of out of earth communications.

2. That the astronauts do not turn off the radio over Asia as claimed by some parties.

3. That the QRM over Asia is not as bad as claimed by some parties. Bill himself said that it is not as bad as over North Africa and Europe.

Thank You.

  • Hello All,

William (Bill) McArthur, KC5ACR, has been very active operating ham radio from the International Space Station (ISS) the previous weekend. On the 21st and 22nd January 2006 (Saturday and Sunday), I managed to make another two QSOs with Bill on board the ISS. With this, I had made a total of three QSOs with Bill and five QSOs with the ISS crews.

What is more interesting is that, my mother, Kathleen (9W2MAH) also managed to make a contact on the 22nd January 2006. Congratulations to my mother, who has became the first YL from Malaysia to have worked Bill!!! Although she was a bit nervous, I am still very proud that she managed to make the contact.

For more information and recordings, please visit http://www.9w2qc.net/issqso2/

Now, I am happy to say that the first station to work Bill, the first OM station to work Bill and the first YL station to work Bill are 9 WHISKEY stations respectively. This shows that, morse code testing is not relevant as a testing standard to test a person's capability to operate amateur radio and a person who can send morse code at 15 WPM do not necessarily have to be a good radio operator.

    Thank You.

  • Hi there. Touche!

Nice job. I think you make a very compelling argument as to the ability and the intent of the whiskeys to explore technically. To strengthen your position, you should extend your sphere of influence to some of the other politically inclined members, be they whiskey or mike.

I think there are a lot of sensitivities in this area. I dont pretend to understand them. I accept them as emotional baggage, so to speak. You have my support.
